Loss of a loved one to suicide can be difficult to bear. It affects friends and family members. The suddenness and magnitude of a suicide death can leave loved ones confused and hurt, wondering why it happened. Feelings of grief can be difficult to express and cope with. At Community Suicide Prevention we understand the pain that comes with the suicide of a loved one. One of our main objectives is to connect those who are grieving with supportive and safe resources needed by individuals and families.
Survivors of loss to suicide support groups play a vital role in helping survivors cope with grief and make the choice to find new meaning and direction in life. Such groups provide a safe place where one can share experiences and grief with others who are walking on the same road. Here a survivor of loss to suicide finds a caring, accepting environment and can progress at his or her own pace. Many people coping with loss have found a survivors of loss to suicide support group to be a major factor in finding a new way of living in a world forever changed by the loss of their loved one.
Survivors of loss to suicide groups in Idaho are playing vital roles today in group meetings as outlined above. In addition, facilitators (group leaders) often respond early to families and close friends after suicide and provide invaluable education to caregivers, clergy, schools and the general public regarding suicide. They are committed advocates for suicide prevention.
